Volunteer: Volunteer from home: Write friendly handwritten letters to senior citizens!

Volunteers write handwritten, one-of-a-kind letters for senior citizens in aged care homes and senior programs. Instead of generic well wishes or affirmations, share personal stories, memories, or everyday experiences in a conversational tone. Write as though you’re speaking to a friend—seniors cherish letters that feel authentic and heartfelt because they create a genuine sense of connection. Keep your messages positive and avoid sensitive topics like religion, holidays, politics, health and mobility.

When your letters are ready to mail, choose a destination facility from one of our partners in Southern Nevada, San Bernardino County, Arizona or across the country. Our list of requests refreshes every two weeks, year-round, so there’s always a place that needs your letters.

Keep in mind that most seniors won’t be able to reply, so each letter is truly a one-time act of kindness.

Getting Started

Register: Visit our website and complete the registration form at the bottom of the home page. Students and groups should follow the links to their separate forms. Check Your Welcome Email: It includes instructions for accessing our user portal. If you don’t see the email, check your junk or promotions folder. Tour the Portal: Follow the portal’s pop-up tour when you log in. If you need extra guidance, email me anytime to request a step-by-step guide.

Special Holiday Note
During the holiday season, we encourage you to share your unique stories instead of holiday-specific wishes. This keeps your letters meaningful for seniors beyond the holidays. For specific guidance, review our holiday guidelines for letter content and mailing deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should I write about?
Think of your letter as a friendly conversation. Share personal stories, hobbies, or a favorite memory. Avoid sensitive topics like religion, politics, holidays, health and mobility. Asking a question demonstrates an interest in the reader, gives them something to think about and inspires conversation. We've created this general guide and these lists of notable dates for each month.

2. Where do I mail my letters?
After registering, check your welcome email for portal access instructions. If you can’t find it, check your junk or promotions folder, or email me for assistance.

3. Can I mail letters to other countries?
Yes! With facilities in four countries, you’re welcome to choose a destination locally or internationally. Just ensure you use the correct postage for international mail.

4. What if there are no facilities in the location where I want to write?
Our user portal refreshes every two weeks, so check back at the start of the next cycle. If there are no facilities near you, you can also choose a location in another region or country if mailing farther away is an option.

5. Do you accept letters in other languages?
Yes! Use the language filter in our user portal to find destinations that accept letters in any of 30 different languages.

6. Can groups or organizations volunteer? How about teachers and educators?
Absolutely! Whether you’re part of a student club, workplace team, community group or classroom, our resources are designed to support group participation. Start here.

7. Can I earn community service hours for my letters?
Yes, students can earn 15 minutes of service time per approved letter. Register using the student form and share photos of your letters with your assigned Community Service Liaison.

8. Is there any commitment required to volunteer?
No, there’s no commitment until you pledge letters in the user portal. You’re free to write as many or as few letters as you’d like, whenever it suits your schedule.

9. What happens if I pledge letters but can’t complete them?
Once you pledge letters in the portal, those letters are reserved specifically for you. It’s important to complete and send them so the seniors receive the connections they’re waiting for. If you’re unsure about your availability, it’s best to wait until you’re ready to write before making a pledge.

10. How do the facilities handle letters?
Each location handles letters differently. Staff often review them to ensure the content is appropriate, and they may try to match letters with individual readers. Some places post letters on bulletin boards, read them as a group activity, distribute them to individuals at mealtimes or place them in baskets for seniors to pick and share. Letters sent to Meals on Wheels programs are typically shared by a volunteer who doesn’t know the recipient. Specific details or requests from facilities may be noted in the user portal.

11. Will I receive a reply to my letter?
Most seniors aren’t able to reply, but your letter will still mean the world to them. Treat it as a one-time act of kindness that brings joy and connection.

12. Can my aged care home, senior center or meals on wheels program receive letters?

Please ask a director or manager to register as a care home.

If you have any questions, need guidance or have suggestions for how we can improve, don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for being part of our mission to spread joy to seniors!

Volunteer: LVMPD Foundation Donate your Cell Phones to Victims of Domestic Abuse

Donate your Old Cell Phones to Victims of Domestic Abuse

The LVMPD Foundation is proud to partner with the LVMPD's Victim Services Detail to collect cell phones and small electronic devices (iPads) to help victims in need.

You can be the #1 thing that makes a difference in the life of a victim experiencing domestic abuse by supporting programs that offer support, encouragement, stability, and love.

So that half-decade-old phone tucked away in storage will still call for an ambulance or police assistance, provided the battery is chargeable. LVMPD Victim Services Unit works with an organization that accepts used cell phones and then re-purposes them as emergency-only devices meant to dial 911 dispatchers. The organization checks each donated telephone to ensure the battery still works and packages them with a charging cable for distribution to high-risk community members. These include domestic abuse survivors and the elderly.

You can find multiple drop-off locations throughout Southern Nevada; call our office at 702-331-6492.

Do #1Thing to make a difference to a survivor of #DV. Donate your small electronic device or cell phone, or make a contribution by visiting https://lvmpdfoundation.org/donate/

Volunteer: Phoenix Volunteer

Mission Statement

The Phoenix offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery.

Description

The ultimate impact Phoenix seeks is to help individuals not only achieve sobriety, but to thrive in recovery. The Phoenix Model is unique because of its non-clinical approach that uses the power of human connection and positive coping mechanisms. Those include activities to help people heal from the underlying causes of addiction.

Phoenix volunteers facilitate a positive and supportive experience by allowing team members to shed the defense mechanisms that have historically kept them isolated. By bringing people together, Phoenix creates a community where people can heal, connect, and practice effective social interaction.

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER? Anyone! We are a strong team because our staff and volunteers come from many backgrounds and communities and have diverse abilities and skills. There are no fees or costs to volunteer. Phoenix volunteers are peers who have lived experiences in recovery, those considering sobriety, and allies to the sober community. The Phoenix employs staff and is served by volunteers who have previously been incarcerated and have criminal records. We prefer to hold events in spaces that are wheelchair accessible locations and located near public transportation whenever possible.   WHAT KINDS OF EVENTS OR CLASSES CAN I LEAD OR SUPPORT? WHAT ABOUT NON-FITNESS EVENTS? Options are endless. The Phoenix hosts both fitness and non-fitness based events. Non-fitness events include coffee socials, meditation, arts & crafts, board games night, and more. We do our best to pair volunteers up to support and lead events that fall within their interests, abilities, and skills.   I’D LIKE TO VOLUNTEER, BUT DON’T WANT TO LEAD EVENTS. HOW ELSE CAN I SERVE? Phoenix volunteers can serve as event supporters. Supporters serve in a variety of capacities, such as helping with event set-up and breakdown, welcoming and registering event attendees, promoting events throughout the community, and helping to bring the Phoenix to new communities. Here are specific examples of serving as a Support volunteer: Event Concierge- Warmly welcome and check volunteers into events to make sure each participant is included and counted! Event Assistant- Set up or break down equipment to help with general event needs. Community Ambassador- Share Phoenix events across your community, from social media to flyers to listservs, so more people get to experience the gift of The Phoenix.

Volunteer: Volunteers to Help with Ministry

R2R Company hosts community-based, family-centered events that meet both our participants’ spiritual and tangible needs. With the help of selfless volunteers and generous donors, we are to provide the unhoused with basic needs such as food, water, clothing, hygiene products, and most importantly, a sense of belonging. Because we value the human connection and seek to revive the “village mentality,” we collaborate with community organizations and city agencies to help us with our efforts. Our current target area is Southern Nevada. “According to the Nevada Homeless Alliance, there are more than 5,000 homeless people in Southern Nevada on any given night, and more than 13,000 people will experience homelessness at some point in the year” (Royer, 2017). Our goal is to reach and serve 2,500 of those 5,000 unhoused persons and to create an additional resource for those 13,000 who may face homelessness within the year. Research suggests a decline in church attendance across the nation. Jones (2021) reports “Americans’ membership in houses of worship continued to decline last year, dropping below 50% for the first time in Gallup’s eight-decade trend”. It was also noted that “The decline in church membership is primarily a function of the increasing number of Americans who express no religious preference(Jones, 2021). Our solution: Take the Gospel to the people. The Word of God is for everyone, and because we do not ascribe to any denomination, we welcome all people from all backgrounds. Therefore, no matter how one identifies themselves, the Love of God and Salvation through Christ is available to all who believe.

Volunteer: Food 4 Social Change

Food 4 Social Change was opened to support the homeless community.

When we cook or cater to them, people come, when they do we ask them more questions to see how we can further help them.

When we bring food into the event, homeless people come and they get along and laugh together.

We are in need of food to serve to the homeless community. Pre cooked items are best and cans that have pop tops.
