Girls on the Run empowers girls and gender expansive youth in 3rd-8th grade through a 10-week after-school program that teaches skills including managing emotions, thinking before acting, standing up for themselves, embracing differences, and supporting each other. They put these skills to use in training to complete a 5K at whatever pace suits them. At the 5K Community Celebration, they complete their 5K with an adult Running Buddy and prove to themselves that they can do hard things. Be a part of this inspirational event at which kids in tutus and unicorn headbands, face paint and silly socks, activate their limitless potential!
Here's what volunteers can do:
Generalists:
First, you will transform the UNLV Campus into a true GOTR 5K Celebration. You will set up barricades, hang team signs, put up the GOTR photo backdrop and selfie station, set up the Gratitude Wall, put up the finish line and the Inspiration Station, and get registration all set for arriving participants.
Then, the magic begins! You'll help participants find their parking location and make their way to the event, provide registration and general guidance on what's where, guide the team parade, cheer along the course, hand out water at the Hydration Stations, hand out medals at the finish line, and distribute snacks to finishers!
Finally, you'll help us bring all gear and barricades back to the staging area. Generalists arrive at 6am and are done by 11:30am.
Sparkle Runners: Volunteer Running Buddies
While most of our girls have a family member or friend to run with, some do not. As a Community Running Buddy you will be the guide for one of our girls as she tackles the 5K. You will need to be supportive, encouraging, and most of all, enthusiastic! It's a BIG day for her -- and for you. We need Sparkle Runners at every pace, as we have girls who will run, walk, and roll the 5K, completing the event in a half hour to an hour and a half!
Acceptance as a Sparkle Runner is contingent on being 18 years or older as well as successful completion of a background check (we have to keep our girls safe!). Sparkle Runners arrive at 7:30am and are done when they finish the 5K with their GOTR Girl, generally between 10:30-11am.
Family members are welcome to volunteer as well, and we’ll assign kids under 12 to work with their parent/guardian.
Volunteer orientation will happen online the evening of Thursday, December 5th and the recording will be sent out to all volunteers the next day, so folks know what to expect when they arrive on Saturday morning.
All volunteers must register online at https://www.pinwheel.us/register/index/Sp255KVol.
